In NOTES, von Sturmer presents a picture of language in motion. Single verbs, nouns, and adjectives are presented on replica Post-It notes, elevating humble stationery in aluminium. At any given moment, just a single note will be placed on the wall, replaced periodically by an attendant. Through this ritual action, a lone word becomes imbued with significance and potential. von Sturmer asks us to consider how language is mutable and ever-shifting, and how meaning and narrative is constructed through context, and ultimately, through us.

Daniel von Sturmer (b. 1972, Auckland) is a Melbourne-based artist, with an experimental practice ranging across video, photography, and installation. von Sturmer was one of three artists representing Australia at the 52nd Venice Biennale (2007), a finalist in Aotearoa’s 2004 Walters Prize, and the winner of the Melbourne Prize for Urban Sculpture in 2017.
