Inside the Keep Out Shed presents a small selection of daily drawings made by Stevenson between 1987-1993. Intended as exercises that recorded the artist’s interests at the time, they trace the formation of overall themes within his practice. A small number became studies for paintings, yet since they were made frequently the breadth of their thinking exceeds that of other artworks.

In a general sense the drawings reveal a conflict central to Stevenson’s practice: the stability of objects themselves. Made whilst the artist was living in New Zealand, they explore gift economy and humour through surprising studies of daily encounters.
