Nicky’s conversion

19 March — 17 April 2025

Nicky’s conversion begins with an intimate scene of a priest rehearsing a sermon in private, while preparing for a public address. It carries reflections on gender, identity, aging, and spirituality, along with other experiences that came to light in the moment. The film concludes with The Last Word, a song arranged for live piano and voice by the musician Abel Mercer. It was composed by the artist while filming, drawing inspiration from the New Testament biblical story of the Syrophoenician Woman (Mark 7:24-30).

The production of the film began while the artist was in residence at Parehuia McCahon House Artists’ Residency over the summer of 2020-21. Nicky is captured at a decisive moment in their trans journey while serving as an Anglican priest.

The film premiered at Klosterruine Berlin, in late April 2024, a cultural venue that hosts contemporary art exhibitions, performances, and concerts. This exhibition is the first public screening of Nicky’s conversion in Aotearoa.
