How do we order what we see, sort like from unlike, decide what belongs and where? Zac Langdon-Pole’s practice is enlivened by the way that his objects and assemblages arrive on the wall having already asked these questions.

The disparate materials that comprise the Assimilation Studies (Xenophora) series are all, at first glance, out of place. Fragments of ancient meteorites formed before the Earth existed, seashells constructed by Xenophora carrier snails that incorporate other shells into their own, and wooden shape sorter blocks from a toy designed to aid tactile perception in pre-verbal children.

Assimilation Studies (Xenophora ゼノフォーラ) シリーズを構成する異なる素材は、一見、どれもそこにあるべきものではないように見え、違和感が生まれる。地球が存在する以前に形成された古代の隕石の欠片、自分の貝殻に小石や他の貝殻をつけながら成長する巻貝の一種、クマサカガイ（Xenophora）の貝殻、そして、言語習得前の子どもたちの触覚的な知覚を促すためにデザインされた玩具、形合わせゲームの木製ブロック。

In their assemblage on the gallery wall, Langdon-Pole’s sculptures enact a kind of formal and poetic togetherness. The spiral swirl of a seashell echoes the spiraling arms of our galaxy. Polished meteorites nested within the apertures of each shell re-enact the primary gesture of the shape-sorting game from which the glossy painted blocks originate. The works operate as a field of connections, a landscape of affinities to be made, questioned, and made again. Distances collapse, distinctions dissolve, and differences between the micro and the macro, movement and stillness, alien and familiar, inside and out shimmer and seem almost to disappear.

ギャラリーの壁面で一つのアッサンブラージュとして組み合わされることで、Langdon-Poleの彫刻は、ある種の形式的で詩的な「共存」を体現する。貝殻の螺旋は、銀河の渦と呼応し、磨かれた隕石は貝の開口部に収められ、光沢のある彩色ブロックの着想源となった、形合わせゲームの基本的な動作を、もう一度演じるかのように再現する。作品は、さまざまなつながりが生まれる場として機能し、関係性が結ばれ、問い直され、そして再び結び直されていく風景をつくり出す。距離は縮まり、境界が曖昧になり、ミクロとマクロ、動きと静止、異質なものと馴染みのあるもの、内側と外側、光の揺らぎで境界線のほとんどが消えてしまうかのように見えてくる。
